Pictures – Hanol and Rohru countryside

2009 September 29

Pictures from my recent Hanol – Hatkoti  trip. Had a ‘wonderful’ trip with three flat tyres in a span of 8 hours. Finally got stuck in Tikkar forest at 8 pm. With no tyre to spare, spent the night in the car at Pujarli as was too tired to drive back to Rohru.  Too tired to write my rant. Posting pictures of my trip.

Looks like a great trip. I want to do this route now that I’ve seen your pictures! Shame about the roads though. Is our PW Minister listening???

This is one of the most scenic route. Only hitch is the roads in Himachal side. From Shimla do not take the Theog, Kharapathar route but instead travel by Narkanda and then on to Tikkar via Baggi. There is a PWD rest house here and is an excellent place to stay. Next day travel to Rohru and then on to Hanol and back. I would also try and include Sungri somehow in the journey. See if you can stretch a little more by 32 km to Sungri from Rohru. There is a nice PWD rest house here. From Sungri you can come back to Ghanasidhar and then take the same route via Bagghi, Narkanda and back to Shimla.

    Hi…
…..Temples in Devbhoomi Himachal are really splendid wondors..! Forget the roads… they will never improve.. unless military rule come in Himachal… i had good opportunities to travel across the state and attend many cultural events during my years as a photojournalist in Himachal

    Cheers..!!!

Thank you for your comments. Yeah, the roads will never improve, at least not in my life time!

      Hi Sachin
It became a hectic day repairing the tyres and then got stuck in the Tikkar jungle in the night. Yes, the last pic is that of at Thanedhar. The Nepalese celebrate this day with a tikka of rice on their forehead. As I came back on Monday morning, saw many Nepalese with their colorful faces. Couldn’t stop clicking this chap at Thanedhar.

Thanks for your comments. I am no journalist! I just post by fluke :)

Ah Awesome Hatkoti… Missed being there on the Ashtami. Lovely pics…. Seems like you had a great trip.

I agree with you… roads are a complete mess in HP. Try plying on the road from Kharapathaar to Sheel. Half our your car will sink in the ‘kaccha’ road. This road has been like this every since I was born :(

Yeah Yoj, I had a *great* trip. Ask me about all tyre repair shops from Rohru to Kuddu and I am an authority now. My original plan was to travel to Kharapathar and then to Tikkar on the newly built road but could not make it. Have you traveled on this road? The forests between Tikkar to Baghi are awesome… Though I got stuck there in the night. This is the best jungle drive in entire Himachal. I would rate better than the Ani – Jollori Pass route.

We too went home recently, and surprise surprise we have a Mahasu fort in our area (balsan). I always thought it was the name of the place, Mahasu Devta was a surprise… I’ll now have to check up with my consultants (Mom, dad, Nanaji, …)
    Nice pics though.
And the road that you have put up on display is a dream compared to Chaila-Theog Stretch. The China ppl have dug up the whole stretch and the Apple trucks have made it worse, and for some reason, the adm is still waiting for a disaster to happen.

Hi Nityin, great photos, notwithstanding the interesting road & tyre punctures. Reminded me of my many trips to Hatkoti. The longest one was from Delhi via Dehradun, Kalsi, Chakrata, Tiuni & Arakot with a night stop at Chakrata. Quite a good spot. From Thanedhar I’ve been via Naur Tikkar (the same way you went) on the way down and came back up via Tutu Pani & Baghi. If you head the other way on the way up from Rohru, that is take a right turn at the fork near Tutu Pani instead of turning left towards Baghi, then you reach Sungri, etc. Love, Deepak.
